KUALA LUMPUR: PAS, which is pushing for the implementation of hudud, now says it is considering Friday to replace Sunday as the weekend if Pakatan Rakyat comes into power.
PAS vice-president Datuk Husam Musasaid, however, it was important for Pakatan to capture Putrajaya first before it carries out the move.
“Let us take over Putrajaya first. We can only think of further planning if Pakatan manages to defeat Barisan Nasional in the elections,” he told The Malaysian Times.
Meanwhile, PAS Youth vice-head Dr Raja Iskandar Raja Yaacob said the party would discuss the Friday move thoroughly if there was a proposal or request.
“Kedah, Terengganu and Kelantan have different weekends from the other states but there are no problems,” he said.
A random survey by The Star showed business owners and social activists are not in favour of switching the Saturday-Sunday weekend to a Friday-Saturday weekend.
Malaysian Shopping Mall Association and Highrise Complex Managementpresident H.C. Chan said changing the weekend would have a negative impact on the tourism industry.
“Most countries have Saturday and Sunday weekends ... we should continue the practice as it has led to a successful tourism industry,” he said.
Social activist and International Movement for Just World (JUST)president Dr Chandra Muzaffar said that while he did not think changing the weekend was PAS' priority, the possibility of it would be disastrous for the country.
“Changing the weekend will be illogical as many Muslim countries, such as in Central Asia as well as Nigeria and Mali, have the same weekends as Malaysia,” Dr Chandra said.
Malaysian Hotel Owners Association president Datuk Seri Abdul Aziz Rahman said industry players would incur a lot of cost in adapting to such a change.
