DAP respects PAS’ hudud stance but it is not in Pakatan manifesto (Update)

GEORGE TOWN: The DAP respects PAS' stand on hudud but it is not in the Pakatan Rakyat manifesto and, therefore, will never be implemented, said DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng Eng.
He said just because the DAP did not agree with PAS' struggle for an Islamic state does not mean the two could not work together.
Lim was speaking at a press conference on Friday at the Bayan Baru market.
Meanwhile, DAP national chairman Karpal Singh has asked PAS leaders to stop bringing up the hudud issue in this election campaign.
"We should bring up the larger issues like petrol prices, essential commodity, human rights and other economic issues.
"I regret PAS is insisting that it will pursue its aim of establishing hudud law which is not in the common manifesto.
"DAP's stand on hudud is very clear. Time and again, I said hudud ought not and should not be brought into the country. When I say that, I speak on behalf of the DAP," he told a press conference on Friday.
He added that it was “not a personal stand but the party's”.
He also said that PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should make a statement on the issue for public interest.
It was reported that more PAS leaders had come out in support of the implementation of hudud law should Pakatan Rakyat capture Putrajaya.
They had expressed support for party deputy spiritual leader Datuk Dr Haron Din who had said that hudud would be implemented in a Pakatan government even if the DAP opposed it.
Kelantan PAS deputy commissioner II Datuk Nik Mohd Amar Nik had said the willingness of the DAP to use the PAS symbol (when it faced deregistration) showed that it no longer feared the implementation of hudud.
Karpal Singh added that they appreciated and valued the willingness of PAS to allow DAP to use its symbol if the DAP's rocket was not allowed in the elections.
"It does not mean that we agree with the Islamic policies of PAS," he said.
